illegal stupid and wrong

Australia's involvement in Iraq was wrong from the outset - Saddam Hussein provided and important balancing act in the Middle East which kept Iran in check and Turkey on the border. Sure violence was an issue but with his removal the region is vastly less safe. (oh and a lot more people are dead today - not because of a dictator in Iraq but a looney in Washington)

Unfortunately however we are there but even more so - we the Australian people ratified this war by reelecting John Howard. We can't walk away from our mess. Of course our role is small - the larger concern is the increasing call from parties in the US to withdrawal. Again the American people ratified this war - they own it - they can't walk away.

Though this war is as bad as Vietnam - the stakes are higher. The world economy depends on the oil, the region is facing significant insecurity - so despite the war being wrong, we own the outcome - we are stuck there.
