Invisible and the media don't care

Thanks for sharing your experience, Tom. I agree with you that a candidate is quite reasonably seen as someone who might have some interesting ideas regarding the seat they are contesting. Not so with Mr Peart, it seems.

Nor does it seem to be the case that he is willing to defend the policies of the Howard Government, or to highlight his necessary connection to them.

Disappointingly, the mainstream media do not seem to care about the evasiveness of such candidates. I emailed Peart the article, copied it to The Age News Desk, and later texted Jon Faine in the hope that someone would try to track Peart down - to no avail. Naturally, Peart has also failed to respond to my invitation to comment here.

I should add that in the bowels of the AEC website I found another number for Peart in an Excel spreadsheet of candidates. Unfortunately, however, it's just the number of the Victorian Liberal Party head office. The Victorian Liberal Party website quaintly suggests that one's only option to contact Mr Peart is to write to them care of that same address. I'll introduce myself to Jonathan should I see him on Saturday at a voting centre. He might need some cheering up.
