Local Issues

By: AlanK (Registered ) on 19-10-2007 06:44

Firstly, let me say that the last report I saw stated that between 2 and 3 cents of the 38c excise on fuels was actually spent on road works.
Secondly, I am retired and I stay off the roads as much as possible. In the 10 years since I retired, I consider the traffic has doubled.
Thirdly, the 38c is a national tax, the 2c to 3c is a national return to road works.
Fourthly, I mention Moggill Road because I know it, but, if I was familiar with other cities, I could have named other streets and roads.
It is a case of using terminology that one is used to.

Bach and Call

By: virtual (Registered ) on 19-10-2007 22:53

A last a reply/acknowledgment from the elusive Mr Bach (would someone give the bloke a brownie point) :) "First, let me apologise to "virtual" for not being "in the building" at his/her beck and call at 12.17 am. I hope you are still on board for this episode of the discussion."
Now no need to be tardy or pedantic mr bach, i have been asking YOU on this thread for a reply to my QUESTION for some time now. We all know politicians are always SO busy and you are obviously not an exception to the rule. This "episode" as you most inaptly put it continues it's monotonous way and yes most of us are aware of all the V8 Mercs on Moggill Rd ... the train from Riverview is a viable option for all while this upgrade is being completed.
With you on the Public Trans. but your pushing the proverbial with all the petrol heads still in 'strawla.
Now ... to the point: and for YOUR benefit i will repeat it, WHO/WHICH PARTY IS GOING TO GET YOUR PREFERENCES IN THE COMING 2007 ELECTION?
You are now on notice as to supplying a legible answer including logical declarative sentences .....
and no need to write a book here mate. whew ...the effort one has to exert to get a simple answer to a simple q., i'd rather deal with triffids any day. (see http:// blogs.brisbanetimes.com.au/ bluntinstrument/)
cheers

virtual comments

Dear virtual

I thought that people on this thread were having a discussion about traffic, public transport and the cost of fuels etc. Some of us are really worried about sustainability, global warming and the tendency for the old parties to indulge in pointless trickster politics and vote buying.

You come along with this question about preferences. So, why would you want to know about my preferences? What about the preferences you might make when you are alone in the polling booth with a ballot paper and a pencil and no one to dictate to you who you can vote for? What are you going to do?

At this stage of the campaign the various parties large and small are having discussions about who will exchange preferences with whom for above the line in the Senate. What you might like to worry about is the secret deals that might be made. If you vote below the line in the Senate it is you that is in charge of the pencil.

For the House of Reps, again there have been no announcements, so why would I have the answer? But again, you are in charge of the pencil.

I regard myself as a community-based political activist since I have not been elected and have never been paid for being a politician. But I do contribute to discussion in numerous forums and don't sit at my keyboard around the clock just in case you ask me a question. So, why not keep this discussion civil and leave out all the sarcastic remarks.

I think there are some politicians who really earn their salary and work very hard. They are so busy they don't always have time to talk to me - nor should I expect them to drop everything and have no rest so I can say, "you are doing a great job". The Greens Senators would make that description.

Regards
Willy Bach

where are we going with this

By: AlanK (Registered ) on 20-10-2007 05:57

I have been in the Kenmore area since 1961, with a dairy farm opposite, pineapples growing on a hill above, neons and penny turtles in the creek, and lots of trees and greenery all around. A trotting training facility where the ambulance station now is, and the old produce agency nearby.
A wonderful rural suburb to live in, and a nice area for families. One thing however, most of the yards were small, most of the homes were small, too, and I doubt that many of the garages were large enough to park too many V8 Mercs in. They were mainly large enough to take vehicles like my 1987 4 cylinder Mazda. Come to think of it, in all the years I have been here, I have only ever seen 1 V8 Merc, and that was a 1939 Grosser. A lovely vehicle, owned by an enthusiast. The care that frighten me are the four wheel drives taking kids to and from school, and doing the shopping after the afternoon school pick-up. There are far more 4WD's on the roads than V8 Mercs.

I am trying to have a stir, I admit that, but, in as much a non-abrasive fashion as possible.

There are lots of other things to talk about, like why do election promises cover 5 or 10 year periods? I thought a term was for 3 years. What plans are there for water storage, and the transfer of that water from one site to another? Not just for south east Queensland, but for Australia. For a nation that built the Snowey Scheme, what have we done since? A couple more for the mix.
Once again, let us keep abrasion out of this and try to have a little couth and decorum, if we can.
