All Pensioners Pay Tax

By: adrian9737 (Registered ) on 27-10-2007 03:20

There is a myth that pensions are a luxury and that pensioners ought to be grateful for getting them. Apart from the fact that most age pensioners paid billions in tax when they were in the workforce, even those who now have no other income than a pension pay tax - GST - on virtually every dollar they spend. If they were a business, they's get the GST back from the ATO. A refund of $25 paid in GST every week could be a nice start.

Pensions should rise inline with rents

By: ausis (Registered ) on 29-10-2007 09:26

Pensions should rise inline with rents as my pension have gone from $450 to $500 per fortnight / person; whereas my rent has gone from $400 to $550 over 5 years to 2007. Bearing this in mind the pension should now be about $619.20 per fortnight / person.

Erosion of pension.

By: janmac (Registered ) on 30-10-2007 03:20

Pensions should be increased to compensate for the GST that is charged, regardless of ability to pay.
I needed dental work this year that cost $3000 and GST was $300 on top of that, so all this year I have been trying to repay that amount.
When I have to have my car inspected to be registered, that's another $1000, of which another $100 is added.
These are just the big items, all the little amounts also add up and cut down on the true value of thepension paid.
Why can't pensioners be allowed a GST-free price for essentials?
