VIDEO: West End: Seat of power? (Griffith, QLD)

By kiley gaffney,

West End, a cosmopolitan enclave in Kevin Rudd's seat of Griffith ,  is now represented both by the preferred PM and QLDs first female Premier, Anna Bligh.

Kiley Gaffney and Barry Saunders asked the residents about their new-found influence.

Interviews - Kiley Gaffney

This puts mum pretty close to the levers of power - she lives just up the road in East Brisbane and has the same two parliamentary representatives.

Who would have thought that the working class part of Brisbane where I grew up could have become so potentially significant! ;-)

West End Girls (and boys)

Nice video guys. Amazing how the local connects with the national - here we have people insisting Howard should retire, and evincing clear weariness with the government, but still not sure what Rudd stands for (even though he's the local member!)

West End may be at odds with the remainder of the electorate, which is, as the OLO electoral profile indicates, quintessentially suburban for the most part - I wonder what a trip to Cannon Hill would turn up?

Graham - it's amazing that Queensland's time appears to have come in Federal politics. I'm sure we all remember the last time a Queenslander hinted at a tilt for the Prime Ministership (as would John Howard, I guess) but now Queenslanders look to be heading for the two top jobs in government (Wayne Swan is shadow treasurer). Is this an indication of the State maturing politically? Is there a particular brand of politics that Queenslanders do well? Or is it just dumb luck? Any thoughts anybody?

I enjoyed this video. People seem eager to speak to you and you give them a good hearing as well. In regards to Qld politics all I know is that my friends who have moved there do not consider themself as Queenslanders. They hope to retain their NSW identity. Will this influence their vote? Yes I think it will.

griffith not ryan!

By: kiley (Registered ) on 15-09-2007 05:42

Thanks Barry but Kev07 is in Griffith not Ryan. I got a letter from his just the other day.

Overall, I am a little disheartened by the lack of interest in politics beyond the local in my neighbourhood, particularly the growth of a politics of denial rather than affirmation. Rudd as a solution to Howard rather than in his own right. I have to say that the Greens are garnering more favour from traditional Labor voters in the area so that might be interesting on election day but nothing too troubling for Kev07 I'm sure.
