LINDSAY’S ‘MILK CRATE’ SOLUTION TO THE HOUSING AFFORDABILITY CRISIS

By Joel Wilson,

Federal Labor Candidate for Herbert, George Colbran has accused Liberal MP Peter Lindsay of again ignoring the needs of his electorate.

By choosing to listen to mortgage brokers, instead of real stories from the community about the housing affordability crisis, Mr Lindsay has demonstrated exactly how out of touch he is.

“First we have the PM telling us all we’ve never had it better…then we have the PM’s man in Herbert telling us the housing affordability crisis his Government has helped create, is all down to the “financial illiteracy” of young people,” said Mr Colbran.

“And what’s his solution? They should all sit around on “milk-crates” until things get better.

“When his views were outed by Kevin Rudd during question time yesterday, he tried to say it was the opinion of mortgage brokers and not him.

“Well, I invite anyone to listen to the interview on youdecide2007.org and decide for yourselves,” said Mr Colbran.

Housing Affordability

The word "illiteracy" seems a rather harsh descriptor for the people who possibly need counselling on financial and budgetting matters. Likewise the suggestion that they sit around on milk crates, until times improve, is a bit rough.
The sad reality is that, in this highly consumer driven and buoyant economy, everyone wants what is available and they want it now. First time buyer homes are becoming a thing of the past, the kids of today want the 4 bed, 2 bath, gamesroom, pool and 2 car home with furnishings to match. Perhaps what is needed is more counselling of mortgagors and probably a stronger code of ethics or self regulation for lenders, say, minimum unencunbered deposits.
What would help considerably would be a lowering of the purchase price. This could be achieved by the state governments fast tracking more land for development and a reduction of the fairly hefty charges they attach to land conveyancing. The latter was supposed to follow on from the introduction of GST.
