WHAT PRICE, LINDSAY?

Federal Labor Candidate for Herbert, George Colbran says Liberal MP Peter Lindsay should tell the electorate how many tax-payer dollars he’s spending on self-promotion. T

he call comes as the Prime Minister refuses to admit just how much taxpayers' money he and his party are wasting on his pre-election advertising strategy.

That's because after eleven long years in office and nearly $2 billion spent on government advertising, Mr Howard and Mr Lindsay think taxpayers' money is for their own campaign funds.

Peter Lindsay has abandoned any pretence of a plan for the future.

With no more ideas, no more energy and no more tricks, his only plan is to drown voters in self promotion.

In the year leading up to the election, the Howard Government is spending over $500 million of taxpayers' money on advertising.*

This desperate binge will take the Howard Government's total advertising spend to nearly $2 billion by polling day.

Since the last election, the Howard Government has spent around $93 million just on advertising for its unfair and extreme changes to industrial relations.

“We’re running a community-based campaign, with the energy coming largely from my supporters and volunteers,” said Mr Colbran.

“I’m relying mainly on donations but I decided to set up an information office because I want people to be able to easily access me…everyone is welcome in the office on Ross River Road.

“I think it’s important our city has solid representation in Canberra…we haven’t had that for the last eleven years.

“If Peter Lindsay and John Howard had done their jobs well enough, they wouldn’t need to use so many tax-payer dollars to try to convince us they’re still up for the job,” said Mr Colbran.

*In 2006-07 and 2007-08, the Howard Government committed $592 million to advertising.

kennedy speculation

By: colgradolf (Registered ) on 25-09-2007 09:42

living in tully, fnq, i heard a peter lindsay ad today, on the radio.
he claims credit for a significant improvement to the national highway system occurring between townsville and cairns. to the best of my knowledge, most of this is happenning in the seat of kennedy and i got the distinct impression from the tone of his statement that the coalition government thought that they deserve to win this seat back from the independent, bob katter, bacause of the pork barrel sums spent here.
infrastructure improvements in this seat are long overdue and perhaps it has more to do with the fact that the government desperately wants to reacquire this seat than any urgency to fix longstanding problems that motivates their spending.

Interesting….. George Colebran has the audacity to criticize Peter Lindsay on spending tax payers money on his campaign, so where is George’s money coming from?? I’ll tell you: 1) Unions and 2) Childrens sweat and tears, shed to build his Maccas Empire…. Which do you think is right??

Strange accusations

By: wil (Registered ) on 05-10-2007 03:11

Vic...you may want to check the spelling of the candidate's name before you launch ill-imformed attacks on him. Now to the 'detail' of your accusations. George Colbran worked with unions when he brought his business to town to establish a fast-food industry award in North Queensland, ensuring his employees were paid fairly and in accordance with the law. As far as i am aware some of his management are on Common Law contracts which are based on the award. He currently employs more than 750 people in his business. Presumably these people are working there under their own free will.

Point 2

By: wil (Registered ) on 05-10-2007 03:49

Unions around the country are running independent campaigns against the PM's Workchoices regime. They are representing their members. They are doing their job. George Colbran is running a community based Federal Election Campaign, funded largely by private donations, volunteers and yes, even a bit of his own money. Peter Lindsay's campaign, conversely: ads, obnoxious mail-outs, staff etc., is funded by the tax-payers of Australia. We also get to pay for his pension, super and state funeral. After 11 years of nodding off on the back-bench, how can Peter Lindsay justify his percentage of the $2 billion dollars the Libs have spent on self promotion since 1996? You may recall him falling asleep in question time, before they moved him from behind the PM...Lindsay has failed his community. The fact George is willing to put any of his money where his mouth is is a strength and shows he's serious about representing his community. You might want to try a little bit of research Vic...that's what journalists generally do before they bang their keyboard or open their mouth.

For Fact?

By: wil (Registered ) on 05-10-2007 05:48

I was born in Townsville, my family has been here three generations..I have lived most of my life here. In the last 11 years, I have watched the below-par performance of Peter Lindsay with distressed interest. He is all talk and no action. If you want evidence of the scary mind that lurks inside his skull here are some of things that he has said in public, to journalists:
After 11 years as Member for Herbert and a few token months as Parliamentary Secretary for Defence Mr Lindsay thinks:

• The solution to the Housing Affordability Crisis is for “financially illiterate” young people to use “milk crates” as furniture, like he claims to have had to, and sit around and wait for it all to pass.

• The solution to the skills shortage is to shut down TAFE, because according to him it’s a “failing institution” and scatter ATC’s around marginal seats. At its peak, the Townsville ATC will produce 150 apprentices. TAFE produces 2000 apprentices every year, as well as thousands of certificate and diploma graduates. He also claims the city campus is empty when it’s actually operating at capacity.

• There are no issues with broadband in regional and rural Australia because the only peop
