Queensland Police Confirm Sudanese crime rates not higher than rest of community

By Kelly Hussey-Smith,

In a statement issued by Queensland Police to Kelly Hussey-Smith from You Decide 2007, it was confirmed that there had been no unusual crime related issues in the Sudanese community in Queensland.

“The intelligence information collated by regional areas does not suggest crime rates among the Sudanese community in Queensland differ to those in the community as a whole”, the statement said.

The statement was sought in reference to claims from Immigration Minister Kevin Andrews that there had been an increase in crime in African communities in Australia. The statement backs up comments from Victorian Police that said Sudanese people were not over-represented in crime statistics.

As reported in the Sydney Morning Herald on October 4th,  Mr Andrews said that the documents that influenced his decision to cut African Immigration to Australia would not be released because “he feared doing so would discourage community groups from providing information to his department in future”.

I listen to people who live in Toowoomba and they say they have become too scared to go out at night due to fear of being attacked by Sudanese gangs.

Sudanese Crime

By: Kelly (Registered ) on 10-10-2007 01:19

The statement suggested that crime rates were not unusually high in the sudanese community in Queensland. I orginally requested information about my own area in South Brisbane but was given only more general inforamtion on Queensland. There will always be variations within these general statements. I think there are two issues here. The first issue relating to incidents specific to particualr commuunities and areas, and the second issue being the potential vilification of an entire group of people -(which happens dangerously easily in the mainstream media).

Listen to people in Brisbane

By: Gemma (Registered ) on 12-10-2007 05:58

Yeh well I am scared to walk around in Brisbane out of fear of being attacked by non-Sudanese gangs. I think it was unfair of Kevin Andrews to single out the entire African community and paint them as violent when lots of people who were born in Australia are just as violent. I think it was just an excuse and I am wondering whether the ban would include white African refugees???
