Brisbane Anglicans in tune with Sydney Arch

By Graham Young,

Interviewed after church this morning, these Brisbane Anglicans appear to agree with Sydney Archbishop Peter Jensen that  if Howard is re-elected he needs to pay more attention to Aboriginal Reconciliation and  climate change, but that Australians are ready for a change themselves. They also share Jensen's concern about Work Choices.

Those who express concerns about Kevin Rudd echo what our research shows -  that Rudd is an unknown quantity (a couple couldn't actually think of his name) and that he has no team behind him.

The health system is also a concern.

One older male voter says that because economic times are so good it is time to "do something new". Another younger voter, a student, is concerned that John Howard, while a "good guy", is trying too hard to "Australianise" us. She also has trouble remembering who her local member is, even though she lives in Queensland's most marginal seat of Bonner.

Reconciliation about turn

By: terry (Registered ) on 14-10-2007 10:47

Do you think that John Howard's surprise conversion to Aboriginal reconciliation was part of a plan to get the support of Jensen and Pell?

This could be too conspiratorial, but the thought did cross my mind today, as it seems the strangest move that John Howard has taken so far.

reason for reconciliation about turn

You are probably right Terry, but I also think that the reason for Howard's about turn on this issue is to create the impression that he's willing to change. I suspect that he hopes it will lift him out of a dark hole to show him in a new and brighter light.

Not the prelates

Terry, I don't think it is anything to do with getting the support of the two bishops. It's been on Howard's mind since 1998 when he announced in his victory speech that it would be his number one priority. That didn't translate into action, but I think you can take it that the issue has lain on his conscience, even as he has taken the votes of those who think Aborigines get too much. A lot of this agenda has been kicked along by Mal Brough who really has a passion for it, as well as Noel Pearson.
