LABOR DEFENCE LAND GRAB

By Nicholas Stanton,

In an extraordinary announcement, Labor today called on the Federal Government to sell off $6 billion in Commonwealth land, which would include Lavarack Barracks and RAAF Base Garbutt.

“There is no possible way I would even contemplate the sale of any land at Lavarack Barracks or the RAAF Base could be sold off, so what does Mr Rudd mean?” Member for Herbert, Peter Lindsay, said.

“The Government’s policy for 11 years has been to sell land no longer required for government needs. If Labor agrees with our policy, that’s good.

“But, is Mr Rudd saying Labor will now sell all $6 billion in government land?

“Is Mr Rudd going to hold just more and more reviews, and then leave the decisions on land release to his new bureaucracy – the National Housing Supply Research Council?

“There is already a body that makes decisions on Commonwealth land disposal – the Department of Finance and Administration.

“The Government has continued to assess all land and its availability for sale. The Government has recently completed its land audit and we’ll have more to say about that during the campaign.”

“Some Defence land has historical and heritage significance, therefore consultation has to be carried out with various stakeholders including historical organisations,” Mr Lindsay said.

“Is Mr Rudd suggesting this consultation be rushed, or worse still not carried out at all?
