Kalgoorlie waking up!

By Kevin Rennie,

Newspaper coverage of both the national and local election campaigns leaves a lot to be desired in the West. Apparently West Australian Newspapers Limited own all the regional papers in the electorate except one. The Kalgoorlie Miner, the only daily, is more active than its parent, the West Australian, which is obsessed with the West Coast Eagles.

An article in the Miner this week  Pollies on the web (Kalgoorlie Miner, 24 October 2007)  is a strange one. Trying to beat up the YouTube election phenomenon they reported on the local candidates. Guess what, apparently Sharon Thiel has produced one video and Barry none. You'd be surprised about how current parliamentarians and aspirng ones are web-shy.

Since I started this report there have been two new items on the Kalgoorlie Miner website today (24 October 2007):

Haase slams funding plan  in which Barry Haase rejects Labor’s Infrastrucure fund

and...

Electorate’s health an issue   about Dr Jefferies-Stokes, a goldfields paediatrician, knocking both major parties for not outlining their health plans for the electorate. Both candidates welcomed her comments on health.

Things are suddenly hotting up!

P.S. A PostScript to ‘Environment warms up in Kalgoorlie’: ALP Shadow Minister for Infrastructure and Water was in Kalgoorlie talking up the party’s WA infrastructure fund with local candidate Sharon Thiel. He couldn’t resist having a dig at the Liberal incumbent Barry Haase for his support of nuclear waste dumps in the electorate. Barry reaffirmed his support for waste facilities. No mention of nuclear reactors.
