Townsville will become the centre of V8 Supercar racing if a Rudd Labor Government is elected, with an announcement today that commits up to $10 Million to help build the infrastructure needed to stage the event.
“The V8 Supercars will provide a major boost to Townsville especially
with the tourists it will bring to the city,” Federal Labor Candidate
for Herbert, George Colbran said.
“I am pleased to announce today that
we will put up to $10 Million towards the construction of
infrastructure if Labor is elected,” Mr Colbran said.
The funding
follows the Queensland Government’s decision to provide $15 Million
towards infrastructure, and the Townsville City Council’s commitment of
$2.68 Million for the event.
“Given the enormous, on-going success of
the Gold Coast’s Indy - and what it offers for the state and nation -
the V8 Supercars have the potential to do the same thing for North
Queensland,” Mr Colbran said.
The Federal funds would be used to
upgrade the Reid Park Precinct near Townsville’s CBD. “Not only will
this commitment give Townsville a showcase event, it will help
revitalise an underused part of the city,” Mr Colbran said.
Mr Colbran
welcomed the $10 Million commitment and said it would create a huge
boost for the North Queensland economy.
Other benefits will include a
joint use pre-vocational training and event training centre, providing
skills training for the automotive and hospitality industries. It will
also give national and international exposure to
Townsville.
“Townsville is a dynamic and growing community,” Mr Colbran
said. “We’re ready to host an event of the scale of the V8 Supercars
and it ensures we’ll have the infrastructure to promote growth and
renewal in our city centre,” he said.
