Biodiversity - the clock is ticking

By Benjamin Howieson,

Independent, Clinton Duncan has called for Labor and Liberal to support the expansion of the current network of national parks and reserves by linking them with a network of wildlife corridors – while there is still time.

“Currently many of our conservation parks and national parks are small and consist of fragmented habitats.  We need to link the habitats to protect what is left of Australia’s amazing biodiversity,” said Mr. Duncan.

Linking the system with corridors for plant and animal species could avoid extinction by allowing them to expand their territories to adapt to changing climatic conditions.

“Australia has lost over 90% of its’ original vegetation and what is left should be protected.” Mr. Duncan said.

“If we do nothing and the experts are right about the effect climate change will have on biodiversity we could loose even more of Australia’s natural heritage.”

“The major parties have not done enough to protect Australia’s natural heritage and have been too slow to act. Time is running out for biodiversity – the clock is ticking,” Mr. Duncan warned.

Clinton Duncan is a strong believer in protecting Australia’s remaining vegetation and applauded the work done by thousands of volunteers and landowners around Australia who work on re-vegetation projects each year.

“Volunteer organizations are punching above their weight when it comes to level of work they undertake and they do not receive the support they deserve from the federal government,” said Mr. Duncan.

Clinton Duncan is the real choice for protecting Australia’s natural heritage.
