God Help Australia

By anne goddard,

Firstly I would like to thank the website creators of “You Decide 2007”. Such unbiased election coverage is indeed a rare and, in these sad times, this site is providing a desperately needed alternative to what the Australian public are being fed by mainstream media.

Australian voters have a clear choice when they open their eyes, take a small step out of their enforced “reality” and take an informed look about them.

They can vote Liberal/National and continue on the track that our current leaders are taking us,

- With unfair workplaces, and an expansion of “WorkChoices”

- An expansion of the nuclear industry, nuclear energy supplies and the associated nuclear waste.

-  The continued, strengthened dispossession of Aboriginal lands under the guise of protecting children which will ensure there is somewhere to store their deadly nuclear waste.

- The continued deaths, brutilisation and torture of innocents held in custody.

- A hospital system in tatters, where those unable to afford private heath insurance are forced to wait for months or years for surgery and years for dental treatment.

- Where multinationals and elected representatives strip away profits made with little care for the little people who actually created our “booming economy”.

- Understanding that nothing will change the status quo in regards to addressing the issues our nation will face with climate change disasters.

- Understand that our boarders will not be opened to refugees who flee from environmental destruction and devastation, war, famine, torture or any other desperate need for re-settlement, despite our duties as a nation under the Geneva Convention.

- Understanding that if they add to our already burgeoning population, they will get free hand outs.

- Understand that our troops will continue to be despatched to wars that have nothing to do with us, at the beck and call of the US President, and that our proud Australian Military independence is a thing of the past.

- Understand that military bases under control of the US will continue to be expanded on Australian soils.

Or they can choose to vote ALP,

-         Who have said that they will “reform” Workchoices… leaving out the actual policy details…

-         Who will continue to expand the nuclear industry (for export purposes).

-         Who will turn a blind eye to deaths in custory, brutilisation and torture of innocents.

-         Who have allowed a hospital (and dental) system to remain in tatters.

-         Understanding that there the ALP have no firm policies in place that will change the current status in regards to addressing the issues of climate change.

-         Understanding that our troops may be withdrawn from Iraq (after they are elected).

Or they can choose to vote for a party with solid policies that will put Australia back on track to becoming the strong and proud nation she once was, a nation which looks after her people and cares about her neighbours.

I am not a religious person, nor will I vote for the ALP, but God help Australia if the Liberal Party/Coalition is returned to power.

Australians need to choose a leader, rather than a politician. Bob Brown’s integrity as a leader has never faltered since the United Tasmania Group was originally founded in 1972. The Greens are now a global political movement with a Global Charter signed on to by 72 nations in 2001 (see: http://www.globalgreens.info/).

Finally, I have been given formal permission to re-publish an article (in full) by Dr Alison Broinowski. A badly formatted summary appeared in a comment here on YouDecide2007.

Please visit http://globalclimatechangeaction.org/node/136 for the summary and see http://globalclimatechangeaction.org/files/ABroinowski.doc (the attachment) for the full article (with references).

It is certainly a shocking article, well written, thoroughly researched; a frightening eye opener.

I will be doorknocking and letterboxing the seat of Flynn (Qld) for the Greens and Friends of the Earth over the next week.

Take care everyone, and use your precious vote wisely. This planet is the only one we have got.

Anne Goddard

democracy or sham

By: Gemma (Registered ) on 05-11-2007 07:21

I am grateful for this site too and hope that people are starting to realise that there are more then 2 parties running. However I think our 'democratic' system needs to be looked at to see if it is really fair because even if I do vote Greens I understand that the vote will go straight to Labor unless 50% of the people vote for the same person. To me that seems as though there are only two parties running.....

votes not wasted

By: wollsue (Registered ) on 07-11-2007 07:11

Thanks for highlighting this article - frightening indeed!

As for the voting system, I've never seen a vote for a minor party as a wasted vote. Sure they may not get in, but you have voted according to your own conscience and your vote is an important record of support for the Greens policies. You can also allocate your preferences to whoever you wish rather than following the party's ticket. Unfortunately Federal elections don't allow optional preferential voting (unlike NSW state elections where you can vote for just one candidate). Perhaps this is an issue worth lobbying the Greens about.

Actions Speak Louder......

By: Birdz (Registered ) on 19-11-2007 09:04

God Help Australia is a very apt comment !
Reecently I read an article by Alexander Deane, posted 15/11/07 OLO.
Second paragraph states " Everyone knows where the Howard-Costello Government stands, and how it performs"
Very true. Actions always speak louder than words.
We have CEO's who are reaping the benefits of lucarative bonuses and tax cuts to the tune of many millions of dollars whilst at the other end of the scale we have families who are going to be forced into working 80+ hours every week just to keep a roof over the heads of their families. With hourly rates being slashed by a third, no more penalty rates, holiday pay, overtime or unemployment we will be in a mess ! There has been much prattling on about unions but this country was founded on strong unions who fought for every right that you, as a worker take for granted now. Men used to work 80+ hours every week to do the same thing that you will have to do if this government gets re-elected.We now enjoy 38-hour weeks but that only came about because there were people willing to take a stand for what was right. By forcing employees to sign individual AWA's, this strips us of our collective right as workers. United we stand, divided we fall. When WorkChoices came in last year, job agencies were given the task of telling employers that the government would pay them for employing single parents. A mere drop in the ocean of never-ending funds to the tune of $4,000 every 16 weeks. And special deals for the unemployed So, at the end of the day, all this looks really good when commenting on how unemployment has fallen. But I wonder what happens when the money dries up ?
This government likes to be seen to be doing the right thing even if it means spending up big.
The recent fiasco in NT involving Indigenious Communities and the children, masks a deeper reason. The land they sit on has minerals galore, that should belong to the governnment who will take care of it.
Troops in overseas countries that we are not at war with, targets Australia in the global realm. All this for our being an ally of the USA.
Refugees who are being cared for on Naru, Christmas Island and in detention centres, who have been there for years, children who have grown up only ever seeing the fences and the dust. What a track record for human rights issues.

here hear, Birdz :-)
I eagerly look forward to Saturday...when, always hopeful, we finally get to see some real honesty in Government.

Warm regards
Anne
